FOR many years my palm trees were home to barn owls. At night I could see them looking down at me, with moonlight in their eyes. We got to be friends. I’d look up and they’d look down and screech. I’d screech back. We had some great conversations.

The Village Baker 7/22/2009
I'm addicted to good bread and The Village Baker is a place to mark on your tourist map when you're wandering up and down Main Street. Everything is freshly baked in the back where you see the bakers hard at work with their music blasting. Round loaves line the shelves as you come in and range from sun-dried tomato & basil, apricot almond, jalapeno & cheese, whole grains, sourdough, and a great assortment of very large wholesome cookies. It's a pity they don't offer a shipping service because I'd be a regular customer. Buy plenty and freeze it at home. You'll be coming back on your next trip.
Oregon Shakespeare Festival 6/15/2009
Can't get over to England to see Shakespeare? Then Ashland, Oregon is the next best place. This is home to all of Will's work performed on three stages from February to November. The repertory company rivals the best in the world. You need at least three days to take it all in, from the history plays to the comedies and a good sprinkling of contemporary ones as well. All beautifully performed and produced. And then enjoy a nightcap at a late night bar on Main to discuss what you experienced.
Camino Medical Group 4/11/2009
The last place on earth to be surprised by good art is in a medical facility, so I was delighted at the choices of the Camino Medical Group in Mountain View. The sculpture at the entrance invites the light to play off the glass shelves producing a whimsical effect of flying windows, while the fountain at the base captures the runaway colors. And glass artist Dale Chihuly's hanging garden of boisterous flowers embraces you with joy as soon as you step into the lobby. Even if you're not sick, it's worth the trip.
