She's super friendly, has great style, and her little salon is retro chic. Great tunes, great conversation... oh, and she'll make your hair look HOT!

JavaU 8/25/2009
Java U is a Montreal-based coffee franchise, which I much prefer to evil corporate entities like Starbucks and Tim Hortons. The Java U McGill location, in particular, is one of my favourites, possibly because it's far away from my usual hang-outs so I can actually get some work done. Other pros include: •Super modern décor •A large seating area with plenty of comfortable banquettes and a long bar in the middle for large groups or business meetings •A steady stream of tourists to spy on •Friendly staffers •Clean bathrooms •The excellent Java U menu, which features lots of great sandwiches, salads and gourmet coffee While I do tend to prefer supporting independent cafés, Java U is my go-to corporate alternative. Break the Starbucks stronghold! Go U!
Miss Janet 8/25/2009
Miss Janet is an awesome hair stylist, who currently runs her own retro-fabulous salon for those who want to look good. Whether you're in need of a cut, color, style, or old-fashioned wash 'n' set, Miss Janet's your gal! Bucking trendiness in favor of styles that fit your face, personality and lifestyle, Miss Janet will trim you up and make you look fabulous. Repeatedly voted one of Montreal's top stylists in the Mirror's annual Best of Montreal, Miss Janet is currently (for 2009) holding the #4 slot. Book an appointment to see why she's my favourite stylist in Montreal.
Concordia Co-op Bookstore 7/17/2009
The Concordia Co-op Bookstore (full name Concordia Community Solidarity Co-op Bookstore, or Co-op for short) is a great little bookstore on the campus of Concordia University. Selling both new and used books at below suggested retail value, you can often find great bargains on books for school AND for pleasure. The store also encourages local and indie media with its artisan consignment service, selling zines, t-shirts, small press books and more. If you're a student, take advantage of their used book consignment services each semester, to get cash back for your old textbooks at prices you choose. Co-op membership is $10 for life, though you need not be a member (or a student!) to shop here. Membership brings privileges, like voting rights at the annual general meeting, as well as deeper discounts on all items in the store. Great community, great vibe, great books... why aren't you shopping here already?!
Brazen Designs 7/17/2009
Brazen Designs is the brainchild of local jewelry designers Rachel Rachna Dhawan. All of her stuff is quality, handmade, and super cool. She has a number of designs to choose from on the website, as well as sale pieces on Etsy, but her coolest section is definitely the Custom Bling. Rachel designed wedding bands for my husband and I, and we were thrilled with the results. I would definitely recommend her for any custom designs you've been pondering, as her work is quite affordable and features really great crafts(wo)manship. Love it!
