Christmas 1865 was a bad day for livestock, as the sprawling Union Stock Yards opened, all beasts on the lookout. All that's left now is the imposing limestone gate (moment of silence). While cattle around the country breathed a collective sigh when the Yards closed, this area headed south afterward and is still in recovery.
Canaryville and Fuller Park have retained scrappy and salt-of-the-earth sensibilities for years. The Union Stock Yards' closing in 1971 hit the community hard, and until recently it was a stone's throw away from the largest public housing complex in Chicago. Even urbanologists may be hard pressed to find much to do on a casual visit.
