The Happening Bagel Bakery
It takes a certain
boldness to name yourself 'Happening,' I always say. And to be fair this bagel
bakery slash shrine to all things Arsenal is usually packed. The sacred
English custom of 'the queue' has no place here. It has given way to a more
bar-like system, relying on the attention of the stubbly guy behind the counter
and the good will of fellow bagel hounds. On match day, the polyester-clad
throng of Gooners tussling for attention has been known to cause a halo of
static electricity to form, illuminating the rows of plaited Chola bread, slabs
of cake and piles of bagels with an eerie glow. The bagels are shaped, boiled
and baked in the open kitchen at the back of the shop, and are chewy, tasty,
golden things of wonder, especially late on a Friday.
