There used to be an urban myth that there are no cash machines in New Cross because of the muggings. Since then it’s gone all art-student-cool but this bit is still quite rugged. Its biggest claim to fame is the fantastic Montague Arms, which looks like it was furnished by a drunken sailor-turned-taxidermist waking up and bellowing “bring me. . .stuff!”
