Dignified, decadent, exclusive, Pall Mall and St.James’s Street are where the aristobrats come out to play, with old-style gentlemen’s clubs, bespoke tailors, and ‘purveyors’ of fine cigars dotted south of Jermyn Street. Count your pennies for a Laduree macaroon, then hit St. James’s Park for a sarnie amid the commoners. Culture vultures congregate in the ICA bar, the peasants head for big portions at Stockpot.

I'm
so ashamed. I call myself a Londoner, yet am guilty of one of the worst faux
pas a
local can commit. Until recently, like a country-dwelling rube working her way
round the city by standing on the left of the escalators, I've been paying full
price for theatre tickets. Paying full price for anything in London
is only for the tourists and the disorganised, but even theatre owners don't
expect anyone to pay full price for tickets. Knowing we'll try to get a
discount whatever they charge, they set remortgage-necessitating rates, let us find
our half price bargains, and still make a profit. So at last I discovered--long
after most people, including every tourist to have ever visited Britain--the
TKTS booth in Leicester Square.
Run by the Society of London Theatre, the tickets are genuinely half price, and
unless you pick a popular night or leave it to the last minute you'll likely
get fabulous seats (mine: middle of row 7 for Avenue Q). You can only buy
tickets in person and on the day, but check www.tkts.co.uk beforehand to see what's available.
