Reseda

Essentials
Reseda is more blue collar than upmarket neighbors Encino and Tarzana, but it alone has been immortalized in a Tom Petty song, "Free Fallin'." It has been mostly forgotten that the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake was located in Reseda at Wilbur Avenue and Saticoy Street, not in its namesake town, Northridge. Too bad the geologists didn't figure that out until a week after the quake, by which time the media had already churned out graphics and segments -- accuracy be damned.

Sundries/Entertainment
The western edge of Lake Balboa Park was once the 110-acre RKO Studio Ranch, where films including It's a Wonderful Life and The Hunchback of Notre Dame were shot. Alas, all remnants of its moviemaking days are gone. Today it's a lovely place to spend a weekend day. Rent a paddleboat and work your way across the lake, or grab a fishing rod -- the lake is stocked regularly by the Department of Fish and Game.

Ramen Nippon
Finding good ramen in Los Angeles outside of Downtown is sort of like finding $50 in your back pocket. Finding a good non-franchise restaurant in the Valley on the other hand, is like finding pirate treasure in your backyard. Combine the two and you have what it feels like to stumble into Nippon Ramen--every visit induces a mild to moderate sense of euphoria. The restaurant is located in a tiny little strip mall, nestled between a French/Armenian bakery and what could be a dentist's office. Everything on the menu is less than ten bucks, and the portions are so big that you'll probably want to share. If you ever wondered if there were still Japanese people in Los Angeles, you'll probably run into all twelve of them here.
