NFT New Orleans Uptown

Uptown
In the unending Uptown vs. Downtown debate, Uptown is painted as a pressed-khaki, mint-julep-drinking enclave with all the stuffy gentility and sublimated racism one expects from the South. In reality, it's less chi-chi than the rumors suggest: cheap restaurants and shopping gems are scattered throughout this leafy green area.

St. James Cheese Company
You've just picked up your favorite Côtes du Rhône from the Wine Seller when it hits you that you don't know a Lincolnshire Poacher from a Stinking Bishop. Fear not, the neighbors have you covered. The St James is an encyclopedia of all-things-once-milk as much as it is a lunch spot. The staff will kindly help you navigate the mounds of stinking goodness as locals gathered around small tables take to their lunches of charcuterie platters, salads, and cheese sandwiches you wish your momma made for you as a kid. The place is bright and whistle clean: a character flaw or muted background for the cheese is up for debate, but retains a communal feel as the place fills quickly during the lunch hour. They have an equally impressive collection of cured meats from Molinari and Cremanelli and patés made from the likes of duck, boar, and venison to compliment whatever variety of cheese you've chosen. As the warmer months come on the noshing moves out onto the patios to ensure your midday bliss.

Prytania Theatre
The Prytania is your quintessential neighborhood nickelodeon. It lacks the seediness of a back alley screening of Seventh Seal and is worlds away from anything resembling a "plex.." Prime time slots are filled with the latest family friendly, mind numbing blockbusters. It's in those off hours though, when the tykes are off at school or dreaming of Hannah Montana, that the theatre hikes up its skirt to show off its roots. The midnite hour brings the twenty-and-thirty-somethings into full nostalgia with cult classics (Labyrinth, Breakfast Club, Gremlins [f'ing Gremlins!], Scarface, etc...) while the starving artists, retirees, and Tulane kids can catch the likes of Hitchcock, Brando, and Mankiewicz on the big screen at noon. Throw in an encyclopedic owner with a true love of theatres and all things friendly, an updated projection and sound system, cheap eats, and a recession friendly admission price and Le Bon Temps has a run for its rainy day money.
