The neighborhood where Jerry Garcia grew up is one of the city's up-and-coming quarters. Accessible by BART, and often sunny when the fog rolls in, Mission Street is chock-full of Asian, Latino and Old SF shops and restaurants. McLaren Park is a huge, untapped resource and the new Crocker Amazon turf soccer fields are like a Central American fiesta on Saturdays.
While you wouldn't travel this far down Mission Street for the nightlife, shopping at some of the produce and meat markets here will yield some unexpected bargains. Dining options are varied, too -- grab a burrito or stop in for a real Italian sandwich at Sorrento Delicatessen. Grab a drink at neighborhood spot Broken Record.
