Fortunately for DC residents, greenery and grass isn't hard to come by. But finding a quiet grassy spot to enjoy nature without tourists, pets and kickball games interrupting your moment with nature may be a harder accomplishment. Then there's Woodend Sanctuary, a quiet National Audubon property tucked outside the city in the suburbs of Chevy Chase. Here, birds of wide variety fly free, Bambi and family wander through the woods, butterflies flutter by, leafy trees blow in the gentle breeze, and children chase floating dandelion puffs in the wind. It's enough of a paradise that every Saturday in spring, summer and fall are booked for weddings at the historic mansion that sits in the middle of the property. Don’t mind the bride and groom wandering aimlessly through several nature paths as you go searching for the most recent bird sighting. There are also nature walks, lectures, an education program for kids and family (preschool and summer camp), and a nature fair. Volunteer activities are also available.
