Upper Rock Creek Park

Essentials
If you ever follow Rock Creek Park to its northern end, you'll stumble upon a quiet sanctuary of beautiful homes, seemingly far away from the gritty city. Sandwiched between the Beltway and the District line, between Chevy Chase and Silver Spring, life here is green and lovely. The Forest Glen Seminary's architecturally eclectic buildings are a must-see, however, even if you don't call this hilly neighborhood home.

Sundries/Entertainment
Despite its primarily residential make-up, this area straddling the DC-MD border has a few solid eating options: Parkway Deli is a local treasure for its king-size whitefish salad sandwiches and hot potato knishes. Otherwise, See more.

>Rock Creek Park serves as the local backyard for residents to play.

Parkway Deli
Considering its out-of-the-way location (just north of Rock Creek Park, tucked into a residential neighborhood), it's hard to believe that Parkway Deli is the spot. In fact if you weren't in the know, you might mistake it for a convenience store. But Parkway Deli is so much more... It's three generations of Gurewitz family cooking. It's house-made corned beef and top-notch chopped liver. It's a complimentary pickle bar. It's a windowless dining room in a suburban shopping center. But one that compels people to line up and patiently wait for a sublime bowl of matzoh ball soup.

National Museum of Health and Medicine
One wonders what the minds behind this Walter Reed museum were wondering when they labeled their oddball collection of deformed fetuses, cannonball-smashed skulls and diseased tissue so mundanely. Housed on the campus of the Walter Reed Military Hospital, this is a must-see for those who skip the Ferris wheel and head straight for the freak show. Between the amputated limbs and outdated surgical implements, it's pretty clear that medical oddities don't get much odder than this. Field trips make up most of the clientele, so come the weekend, the place is usually deserted--and that much creepier.
