Food Stalls. Red Hook Park. Eat There.
Friday, July 20, 2007
I’ll make it simple for you: go to the corner of Bay & Clinton streets in Red Hook on a Saturday or Sunday around lunchtime (whatever time that might mean for you). Get on line at one of the food stalls you’ll see there that has the word “pupusa” on it. When it’s your turn, say the words “two pork-and-cheese pupusas, please.” Order whatever the hell else you want at that stall or at any of the other stalls—corn-on-the-cob, ceviche, tacos, drinks, blah blah blah—but don’t ask anything else to be particularly special. It’s all damned good and damned cheap, mind you, but just don’t expect anything to reach the blessed heights of goodness that the pork-and-cheese pupusa does. If you don’t think it’s great, all you’re out is two bucks and some sweat. Just don’t ask me to respect you in the morning.
