There are certain boutiques in this city where upon entrance you are scrutinized, judged harshly, and ignored until you purchase an endangered baby panda belt. Some people love this experience. I, however, would rather shop where I don’t have to take out a loan to buy a t-shirt and get feedback that goes beyond scoffing. Alter seems like my ideal match, selling shoes, men’s & women’s apparel, jewelry, and gifts. The store, run by Tommy Cole and Roy Caires, sells their own line of restructured vintage designs, called “This Old Thing,” alongside a selection of young design houses, (many of them local) nice vintage, and really interesting, hard to find labels like Canada’s PreLove, which makes sustainable clothing. You can get something nice for under $100, no one is going to ignore you, and the fellow shoppers are attractive but, remarkably, still act like emotive human beings. If you need help finding an appropriate outfit or gift, Alter is excited to assist, and you may walk away with an improved sense of style. The store is particularly good if you’re looking for stylish dresses or vests, vintage boots and pumps, and the essential skinny jean.
