Bob and Judi’s Collectibles

Tucked into the mix of shops, bars, and restaurants along a Park Slope thoroughfare, this humble shop is home to a huge collection of tchotchkes, as well as a limited but well-chosen haul of pricier antiques including furniture and jewelry. Among the best items in the place are the Deco-era highball glass sets complete with matching wire caddies and pitchers (between $30-50)—because in the atomic age, one martini was, apparently, never enough—while the vintage cigarette ads and mint-condition wooden fruit crate labels from the ‘40s and ‘50s (about $3) were great hits when I framed them and presented them as housewarming gifts. Be careful not to get taken for a ride, price-wise—the owners love to mark up shabby kitsch items as “one of a kind antiques,” but on closer inspection the damage and poor craftsmanship underlying many of the pricier pieces stands out. A sharp eye and awareness of the standard caveat emptor approach to antique and vintage shopping should be enough to keep you from getting hoodwinked, though, and even if you leave empty handed, browsing through this retail time capsule will put a smile on your face.
