Cleveland's Whiskey Island
Posted by:  oliver ray

Whiskey Island, also called Wendy Park, is one of those very tucked away parks that unless you've heard of it or go exploring and chance upon it, you will never find. Located on the Western side of where the Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie, Whiskey Island is a great park to go to go for a walk, a run, sunbathe, swim, play volleyball, take pictures, you name it. The park is also surrounded by active and inactive remnants of our past as well, like bridges, silos, passing by freight boats and an abandoned Coast Guard station, which is a big draw for first timers and people looking for photo gold. The Coast Guard station is a very keen building built in a mid-century modern style design and is essentially in ruins. Plans have been made by the city of Cleveland to repair it, but it has been very secretive. Nevertheless, it is pretty cool to check out. The beaches here are beautiful, with loads of washed up driftwood that makes you want to take up carpentry. Sunsets are made even more romantic by the cool breeze and the sound of waves lapping on shore and trains passing by in the background. The small wooded area is relaxing as well. People watching is always fun too, and for such a secluded park, it is very safe. The most menacing thing in the park is the ample supply of duck poop. Unfortunately the beach area is a bit small and littered with washed up plastic, but swimming here is safe and pleasurable. I don't know of any park like this. The park bar, Cropicana, is worth missing.
