Joan of Arc Statue (Jeanne d’Arc)

March is Women’s History Month and this year the ladies of the District had plenty to celebrate. From Nancy Pelosi taking her place as the first female speaker of the house to Hillary Clinton preparing to launch a full frontal campaign for the presidency, these are heady times for women in Washington. While there will be no shortage of smarmy luncheons commemorating the national event, if you are searching for a way to celebrate formidable and accomplished women without having to don a power suit, I suggest a pilgrimage to Meridian Hill Park to pay a visit to the Joan of Arc sculpture, DC’s only female equestrian statue. A gift presented to the women of the United States in 1922 from the "Ladies of France in Exile in New York", this piece is a bronze replica of Paul Dubois’ sculpture of the French female warrior and saint at Rheims Cathedral in France. Poised at the park’s peak, Ms. Arc stares boldly ahead at a panoramic view of the District, contemplating perhaps a charge down the center of the city. However, having been robbed of her sword by vandals in 1978, any hostile takeover attempts would likely prove unsuccessful.
