Washington Deli

Now that I work on the Mall, one of the things I miss most about K Street is the infinite number of spots to grab lunch. These days it’s just vending machines and Smithsonian cafeterias with overpriced, lukewarm, soggy fries and yappy children. But back downtown, there’s Washington Deli, a tiny spot that caters gourmet subs, pizzas, and freshly baked cookies (try the Oreo one) to hungry Suits in their stuffy office buildings. While the place mostly does lunchtime takeout, there is outdoor seating during the warmer months. If you’re jonesing for a slice, it’s the pizza here that we must discuss. It’s NYC-style and it’s more than tasty; not to mention their vegan pizza is the best I’ve ever had. Since I can’t get my weekday fix anymore, looks like I’ll be going downtown on a Saturday (who does that?) for a slice, or two, or three.
