Be You A Simpleton or A Greek

   Kanella
The plastic awning that drapes the corner of this restaurant gives the impression that perhaps it's best to just keep walking. However, once you step inside the doors, take in the alabaster walls, rustic wooden tables and chairs, and crisp blue accents, you will feel at ease. It's like teleporting to Greece, sans painstaking plane ride. Significantly more crowded at dinner, try stopping in for lunch. The fare is light, yet satisfying. My only complaint was that the spanakopita (phyllo dough stuffed with spinach and feta) was about the size of my pinky finger. I made myself feel better by thinking of how much money I was saving since I didn't have to pay for it in euros. Other diners included a table of Greek ladies, locals from the neighborhood, and some business lunchers. Even the bathroom was luxuriously equipped with enough room to move freely and not contort your body to fit into the 6 inch gap between the toilet edge and bathroom stall. Whether you're a simpleton itching for a gyro or a Grecian looking for a fix (food-wise), Kanella will not disappoint.

7th Bistro Heaven

   Bistro 7
Nestled between two unsuspecting buildings, Bistro 7 is like stepping into a tiny little paradise of food. The restaurant exudes intimacy, with only a handful of tables, crisp tablecloths, and soft lighting; it's the perfect place to take a date you want to impress--or your parents, because they will probably foot the bill. The food is enticing eclectic, prepared with local and organic ingredients that permit even tree-huggers to feel at ease. The open kitchen allows you to watch the magic and provides a perfect distraction should that date of yours take a steep nosedive. Tuesday-Thursday try the $35, five-course sampling menu, which climaxes with braised beef short ribs over lobster risotto. Bistro 7 is a BYOB, but don't attempt to skate by with Franzia. You'll only be doing yourself and your dining partner an injustice.

Art, Availed

   Absolute Abstract
I love art…I mean, who doesn't? But my paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle and my deep-seated love of concert posters gives the walls of my house a can't-let-go-of-college vibe. Sure, it'd be great to splurge on a really intense original watercolor or something and support some emerging talent. But if that means there would be no chance in hell of me lying on a Mexican beach for a few days this year, the choice makes itself. Quiero una margarita, por favor. At Absolute Art, you don't have to sacrifice anything to put something tasteful (or not... it's your house, after all) and chic on your wall. Take a look through their gargantuan catalog and pick from a variety of classic pieces. Or, browse their impressive selection of Philadelphia photos, specially commissioned for Absolute Art. If you don't see a size that works for your wall space, no problem--Absolute Art can resize anything in the store so it meets your needs. Good luck finding a fancy-pants watercolorist who will do that for you.

Lawn Chair Drive-In: Grand Finale

I'm an idiot for not highlighting this great free movie series earlier in the summer. With only two films left to go--you can read all about 'em here--you have two beautiful Tuesdays to catch the remaining feature films. First, plan to show up just before dusk. There are always lots of people, but always a place to set up. Second, prepare to experience some technical difficulties at some point. You're outside, and they're projecting on 16mm film. Sometimes they need a moment. Third, bring your open mind. Unless you're already an experienced film buff with wide tastes, you may not be into some of the stuff. Happy popcorn crunching!

Slavs and their Bathing

   International Salon
This is truly a family business composed of three generations of Russian women. The place is decorated with beauty magazine articles highlighting the expertise of the salon. Apparently this is THE place to get your nethers waxed. Luckily for the men, they can attend to your Sasquatch issues. When you walk in, don't expect an acknowledgement of your presence, as apparently the fame has gone to these ladies' heads. When your time comes, you will be summoned to the back room to choose your torture. Discretion is not in their vocabulary and the telltale walls will reveal how hirsute your pubis is to everyone in the waiting room. Supposedly you can pay via credit card, but if the Mother Hen hasn't taken her Celebrex she will demand cash. Even when you tip, don't expect a "thank you" or "come again soon," because everyone has already gone back to watching As the World Turns, not caring if the door hits you on your now sore behind. I kick myself because in four weeks I will inevitably be back; the babushkas are that good.
