Esther M Klein Art Gallery
Who says you have to go to Old City to find a good art gallery? The Esther M. Klein gallery in the University City Science Center is open to the public, free (always a perk), and has some of the neatest exhibitions in the city—and most people don’t even know it’s there. Located on the ground floor of the Science Center’s 3600 building, this gallery’s small size doesn’t limit its artistic spunk. One recent exhibit, Scent is Life, was devoted to—surprise, surprise—the sense of smell. And we’re not talking paintings of pretty flowers; we’re talking old flowers themselves, beakers, and test-tubes full of scents just waiting to be sniffed. Another recent exhibition featured employees showing off their skills at the in-house exhibition. From now until October 27th, the gallery is hosting the fascinating show Saving Faces. Artist Mark Gilbert paints patients who have undergone facial reconstructive surgery for genetic deformities, cancer, or injury. Plus you have no excuse not to go—it’s less than two blocks from the blue line and each of the trolley routes.
