Arden Theater
Winesburg, Ohio is a brilliant story, magnificently rendered by the Arden Theater Company. Based on Sherwood Anderson’s novel of the same name, the story consists of several small-town characters whose daily routines overlap and transform seemingly mundane occurrences into a series of unusual related tales. It’s a task to fi nd a play that can satisfy the artistic cravings of many; Winesburg is accessible, but operates on a is accessible, but operates on a high level. While the play’s tone will cause introspection, your spirit will remain light and your toes will continue to tap because of the catchy original folk music. There’s nothing contemporary nor new-age about this play, which is refreshing considering the number of experimental theater and Fringe shows that Philadelphia recently experienced. The acting is solid and passionate, and the score gracefully weaves together each vignette. The set is masterfully created with two-dimensional windows dangling from the ceiling, enabling a voyeuristic glimpse into the shared lives of these featured small-town Ohio players. The Arden experience is both impressive and wholesome, and a perfect cultural night on the town for friends and family wary of dabbling in the arts or conservative with their taste in theater.
