Sitting on a block in West Philly is a semi-autonomous region known as The Second Mile Empire–The Second Mile Center, The Second Mile Center Also, and The Second Mile Center Too–is known for its diverse exports (and imports). They primarily sell used clothing, followed closely by miscellaneous electronics, furniture, house wares, and miscellaneous miscellany itself. In less silly-analogy terms: it is a thrifter's delight with a great mix of junk from the previous five decades plus some occasional designer cast-offs from the nearby Penn kids; there are tons of books, records, jewelry, cool chairs, weird kitchen implements you don't know how to use, etc. The Second Mile Empire may not be a chic vacation spot; humming to satellite gospel radio and moving through rows and rows of clothing isn't exactly dozing to soft notes of music on the tropical breeze, but it is a good hour-long escape from routine. You might even come back with some fabulous stuff to impress the folks at home.
