Institute of Contemporary Art
Curator 1: Ho, hum, what famous artist should we exhibit next?
Curator 2: Ho, hum, it’s all been done.
Paint dries.
Curator 2: Wait! I’ve got it! Let’s invite a bunch of grassroots, artist-run collaborative and advocacy groups and let them create a physical microcosm of the perfect artistic community. And let’s turn over all programming of museum events to them! And let’s let them have the space for ten weeks! Let’s give them the space to build 30-foot-tall paper treehouses and put up tents and play music and hold workshops–and we can just go to Bahamas until spring!
Curator 1: Brilliant!
Brilliant indeed. Locally Localized Gravity at the (almost always brilliant) Institute of Contemporary Art brings together eight artists’ groups and let’s them go wild, which is to say, puts them at the helm of two and a half months of diverse programming that includes film screenings, musical performances, whiskey infusing workshops, and much more. (I’m not kidding about the 30-foot-tall paper treehouse.)
