L'Etage
First Person StorySlams is a new, monthly real-life-storytelling competition presented by First Person Arts at L’Etage. The open-mic, amateur performer idea seems to be proliferating in Philly like…um [insert cliché involving rabbits here]–there are readings, music open-mics, improv nights, monologue, and poetry slams. Enough slamming of various sorts to make you consider buying insurance for your entertainment calendar. This said–First Person Arts is entering the fray with a specific difference that could lead to a unique experience (and a really good time)–the five-minute-or-less stories told at a First Person Slam must come from the storyteller’s own lives. Judged by members of the audience, the competition will be both fierce and funny. Winners are invited to participate in the November Grand Slam, presented during the seventh annual First Person Festival of Memoir and Documentary Arts. A diverse group of Philadelphia personalities have been tapped to host the StorySlams with Philly favorite–director, writer, and producer Madi Distefano–hosting the premiere slam on April 24th. Come out and tell your story!
