The winter months bring the RiverRink, but when June rolls around and summer creeps in, we are left standing at the side of the Delaware looking at puddles instead of zamboni-smoothed ice. What should we do? Hop on the El and bring your skates over to the University of Pennsylvania's ice rink, which has many public skating sessions. $5.50 on weekdays or $6.50 on the weekends will get you in, plus $2.50 for skates if you don't have your own. They also host open hockey sessions occasionally, though the admission is a bit higher. And if you prefer watching others fall down rather than doing so yourself, there are several hockey leagues that call the rink home, from youth clubs to Penn's team. Either way, consider this: summer is officially here and we are all be bitching that it's too hot instead of too cold. That's what makes a trip to the rink perfect: built-in air conditioning along with that exercise.
