   Artisan Boulanger Patissier
Artisan Boulangerie Patissier may not look like much from the outside. There are no frills or thrills; the awning has (probably) seen better days. The inside of the shop consists of a bare counter and a big cooler in the corner that houses a bunch of Gatorade. Upon first glance, you might be inclined to do a 180 and walk right out the door without buying anything, but what a mistake that would be, my friend. Artisan’s baked goods are nothing short of goose bump-inducing. Give the almond croissant a taste and you’ll never be able to go another weekend without one. Artisan is a French/Asian fusion bakery—and the meeting of two cultures never made stomachs of the masses so happy. The earlier you get there, the better the selection of baked goods you’ll find yourself choosing from. So, grumble while you drag yourself out of bed at 9 am on a Saturday. All morning grumpiness will immediately evaporate after that first bite of croissant. If you listen carefully, you may even hear birds chirping and notice the sun seems a little brighter. Seriously, it’s that good.

Comment: Update, March 2009: The awning has been renovated and Andre and his business partner are in the middle of transition in the business. The Gatorade cooler is gone, seats and tables have arrived, and soon Andre will have a fully fledged French sandwich shop up and running. Bit by bit, he is acquiring all the necessary gear. Andre is extremely approachable, has been all over the globe and has an incredible repertoire, only a little of which is on daily display in the shop. The bread and pastries are priced extremely reasonably; a similar location in Center City, Philadelphia or Gotham would charge multiples of what Andre does. The quality is fabulous. The location may be obscure, but these are literally some of the best pastries and breads in the city. You have to be in the shop by 8:30 am sometimes for certain types of bread and pastries - they sell out quickly. Andre is in desperate need of a legitimate apprentice - very few individuals can handle a real baker's hours, but the payoff will be learning from a worldly, master artisan baker. He yearns for the French system in which the government subsidizes the employment of apprentices. Are you young? Can you work hard as hell and tolerate absurd hours? Do you love food? Visit the bakery. A real treasure in South Philadelphia, and we're lucky to have it here.
