I took French classes for 8 years and I still had to look up what “L’etage” meant. It translates to “the floor” which is probably a reference to the lounge’s bustling dance floor. Unlike many Philadelphia dance spots, you won’t find an overabundance of white-man overbite and furrowed brows on the dancers’ faces at L’etage. Instead you’ll see lots of smiles and bad dancing…not that anyone cares. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the DJ spins tunes that get the crowd revved up and singing along, like Skee Lo’s I Wish. For those who haven’t hit their “7-drinks-to-get-me-on-the-dancefloor” minimum, there are a ton of small cocktail tables at which to perch yourself. If roaring music and a packed dance floor make you cringe, visit L’etage earlier in the week and take in the cozy French ambiance while sipping wine and enjoying a cheese plate. Call ahead to find out about their regular cabarets and sporadic live performances—spoken word and musical.
