Philly’s comedy scene is kind of broken. It’s in a Humpty Dumpty state, shattered after the 80’s comedy boom and still trying to pick up the pieces. These days, there are a few stand-up clubs operating, a few sketch groups performing, and a couple of regular monthly comedy shows. But one area–dare I say the core of comedy–is still going strong in Philly. That yolk in our comedy egg is improv, and our big annual event, the Philadelphia Improv Festival (PHIF), is coming up November 8-10. Featuring local and national performers, the PHIF proves both that Philly’s improvisers have some serious talent, and that our scene has enough gravity to pull in groups from as far away as Los Angeles and Austin. The Festival’s three days will feature both short-form and long-form groups, some of which are musical (the idea of not just being spontaneous, but being spontaneous and musical makes my brain clog up) and all of which are talented. For information on performers, workshops, and tickets, visit the PHIF website .
