The original Scarecrow Video opened in 1988 with about 600 titles. After various expansions, relocations and ownership changes, the store sits firmly in its present location with over 60,000 titles in stock. The sheer volume of their collection is impressive enough to draw any movie geek into its labyrinth of shelves, but there are other things that set Scarecrow apart from the rest. Besides sorting their movies by genre (comedy, drama, nunsploitation...), they also feature acclaimed directors in their own categories (from Kurosawa to Peter Jackson), foreign films by country, as well as new releases and periodic selections on a theme, picked by one of the staff. Oh yeah, the staff. Most of the people at Scarecrow have been working there for years and actually enjoy their job. Even on a bad day, they'll be a lot more helpful than that kid at Hollywood Video, with candy in his teeth. One of the guys spent a good five minutes helping me find a movie that I couldn't remember the title to (yeah, we found it). And if you're looking to buy or rent anything rare, bizarre, only on VHS (laserdisc, anyone?) and you haven't been here yet, you're probably new in town. You might think you're hot shit cause you've got the five-atta-time Netflix account, well guess what, Netflix doesn't have a motorcycle movie category.
