10th Street Cafe
With unemployment rates surging and a sagging economy, it is baffling that brunch snobbery is allowing the cost of an entrée to nearly double that of the minimum wage. While mimosas are a posh way to kick-start one’s weekend, the stimulus provided by a plateful of pancakes from one of south Philly’s most unassuming treasures is all the more intoxicating. The 10th Street Café, nestled in the corner at Snyder Avenue, is nobly making up for the market by serving up ordinary victuals that are luxurious in flavor, not in price. Pancakes sweet as candy, more so if swollen with chocolate chips and bananas, are gems of the griddle that should be selling like, well, you know. If they seem too rich for your taste, 10th Street’s economical two-egg breakfast will ring up at less than one Bellini. Not yet sold? The stock of this small-business champion is strengthened by snubbing bourgeois cola tyrants in favor of a supply of Royal Crown sodas (including Cherry 7-Up and Orange Crème). Now throw your Bloody Marys into the Delaware and revolutionize your dining portfolios.
