Lucky 13
A lot of people who live in South Philly were born in South Philly. And they don't necessarily love sharing their pocket of the city with anyone else. Walking into small local bars, non-native South Philadelphians would often be greeted by glares from old Italian men and the sound of a record being scratched to a halt. It's more Goodfellas than good feelings. However, as tons of Center-Citiers migrate to the affordable housing in South Philly, more hip, friendly pubs are springing up. Lucky 13 is a great new addition to the neighborhood. Formerly the unwelcoming Vincenzo's, Lucky 13 hosts a diverse and low-key crowd. Clark, the owner, plans to add some taps in the coming weeks, but for now there's a decent selection of bottled beer. The comfort food--like the deconstructed meatball sandwich or the mac and cheese--is tasty and almost too pretty to eat. There are flat screen TVs for folks who want to watch a game and a Pac-Man table for those with an abundance of quarters. This South Philadelphian feels lucky to have a spot like Lucky 13 just down the block from her house.
