DERIVE RULES 1. The derive will start at the NFT Headquarters (2 East Broadway, 4th floor) at
1:00. Materials, NFT guide books, and rules will be distributed to each team.
2. Teams - Teams should consist of 2-5 players. You must stay with your team
throughout the derive. If you don't have a team at the start, we can put you on
one.
3. NFT Tools - You will need to use the NFT guide book, NFT iPhone app, or NFT
mobile site to conduct the derive. It doesn't matter which medium you prefer to
use, but you should stay consistent to that medium through out the derive. If
you are using:
• book - use Map 4, pages 30-37
• iPhone app - toggle to the "Neighborhood" menu, use the "Lower East
Side", only use the top categories (Restaurants - Bagels)
• mobile site -
m.notfortourist.com - from the drop down menus select "New York", "04-Lower
East Side", and "All Categories"
4. The first site for your derive will be in an envelope included in your team
materials marked "Start". When instructed open the envelope and use your NFT
tools to find the location and start walking.
5. Mapping - Be sure to mark each location and the path you travel on the map
included in your materials.
6. Flow Chart - When you arrive at the location consult the NFT flowchart
included in your materials to derive the question/challenge for the location.
(There is no right or wrong question/challenge. The flow chart is designed to be
random.) The questions should be answered by someone outside of your team,
preferably someone who is associated with the location.
7. Chalk Mural - After you have answered the question/challenge it's time to get
creative. Using the chalk in your materials, create a visual representation of
the answer on the sidewalk or street at the location. Be creative! Prizes will
be awarded for super chalk drawings so be sure to take pictures as you go. If
you arrive at a location where another team's drawing already exists, add on to
the drawing. Make sure to PHOTOGRAPH every drawing — or in some way document the solution to the challenge via photography!
8. Cipher - After creating your chalk masterpiece, you will use the first letter
from your answer to find the next location on your derive. For example, if the
answer is "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", the letter you would use is the "D" from
"Don't". Now, starting at the beginning of the listings in your tool, search
through the location names until you find the first one that starts with "D".
That is your next location. If there are no locations that start with your
letter, use the next letter in the alphabet and find a location starting with
that letter. Cipher example, if you are using:
• book - start on page 31 and scan down the column for a location name
starting with "D", there are none on pg. 31, proceed to pg. 33, none there, pg.
34 - "Doughnut Planet" is the next location
• iPhone app - start with the first category "Restaurants", view it in
the list format, not map, and scroll until you find one that starts with "D",
"Dash Dogs" should be the first one you come across, making it your next
location. if you didn't find a restaurant that started with "D", then you would
proceed to the next category "Nightlife", then "Shopping", etc.
• mobile site - you should have one long list of all the locations in
the area, scroll down until you find the first location name that starts with
"D", which is "Dah Bike Shop", be sure you are looking at the location name and
not the category (i.e. Bike Shops:, Coffee:, etc)
9. When you arrive at your next location, repeat steps 5-8. The only exception
is in step 8, don't start from the beginning of the location listings, start
from the position of the most recent location you used (i.e. your "D" location.)
If you get to the end of the listing or the last page, start from the beginning
again. If you come up with the same location more than once, you should visit
the location again, but try to make the experience different from the last.
10. At 4pm, open the envelope marked "Finish". Inside you will find the final
clue that will lead you to the last location on your derive (a.k.a. the after
party!)
