O. J. Simpson put Brentwood on most Americans’ radar, but this neighborhood is back to being the quietly affluent place it was before the media circus. San Vicente Boulevard serves as a pleasant place for a jog or bike ride (complete with a bicycle lane) and is the scene of the annual Kickin’ Cancer 5K run. Many young professionals prefer the rent here to neighboring Santa Monica, but prices have recently been crawling steadily upwards. Parking can be a nightmare, but it’s worth the trip. Carry cash, valet often.

Gotta say, I'm mildly surprised nobody has reviewed The Getty on NFT... I suppose it just seems obvious that you should go if you're in LA--and you should. That said, there are a few things I picked up on my visit.
1. Parking is $15. So in a practical sense, this place ain't free.
2. Yes, the gardens are amazing. Yes, the architecture is stunning. The views too. But hey, the art ain't so shabby either. Rembrandts and portraits of popes aside, by far my favorite works were three paintings by Théodore Géricault, one of the pioneers of the Romantic movement. What struck me was his unusual content--"Three Lovers" depicts a menagie trois (bow chica bow wow) and "Severed Heads" which depicts, well, severed heads. Check 'em out on the second floor of the West Pavillion (Room W201).

Who said Southern Californians were full of body-conscious, food-shunning waifs? Eat your heart out LA: SusieCakes in Brentwood is bringing back homey sugary carbohydrate heaven in the form of popular cupcakes, buttercream frostings, moist layer cakes, pies, cookies, and bars that your grandma once baked. Joining the retro trend in baked goods and reminiscent decadence, SusieCakes offers $3 frosting-filled cupcakes in 10 different traditional and retro flavors such as orange creamsicle. Cake varieties include strawberry chiffon, red velvet, and carrot cake. Custom layer cakes can be ordered as well. For the kids, there’s cake-decorating at the counter with a rainbow of colored sprinkles available to make a mess of before eating. Fortunately in today’s society, being messy in the kitchen means shopping at SusieCakes and letting them do the clean-up.

Iliad Bookshop
The outside of this treasure is covered with a mural depicting famous scenes from classic literature. It’s also located just adjacent to Odyssey Video (get it?). For a book lover, this store is a little slice of heaven. I could browse for hours (and have). Specializing in literature and arts books, The Iliad has thousands and thousands of books, and the staff is very knowledgeable and, even better, helpful. They usually have what I’m looking for, but they’ll order anything and even search for out-of-print books. The store’s relaxing environment comes complete with couches and kitties that will curl up with you while you sit and read. There are always two tables of sale books, usually $3 to $10 each, and there’s often a box of free books placed outside. Much to my surprise, I’ve found some really good books in there, and you can’t beat that with a stick! They’ll be moving in February to another North Hollywood location, so check the website for details.
