Big Blue Marble Bookstore
When I was a wee amoeba sprout, I spent most of my time around Green Street and Carpenter Lane in Mount Airy. I shuttled back and forth between Henry School and Summit Day Care, which, for simplicity’s sake, sit on either side of Weaver’s Way Co-op, where I would stop in with my little friends to buy fruit leather. Whenever I go back, I slip into a syrupy nostalgia that’s a bitch to pull me out of—so sticky! My most recent trip into the past zone led to the discovery that the corner of Greene and Carpenter is the new it-spot, as far as Mount Airy goes at least. There’s the sort of new High Point Café, selling leafy sandwiches and cozy hot liquid stuff. There’s the newer Big Blue Marble Books, which doubles, I gathered, as a community chill-spot, and features new books with a liberal/Judaic/lesbian bent, and a really great children’s section. And there’s the newest, Springboard Gallery, which only recently had its first show. The space will be used as a meditation center, gallery space, and more. While this may not be your past, it just might be your future.
