Sausalito
Just over the Golden Gate lies picturesque Sausalito. With a mere 7,500 residents, by most standards it’s a small town. However, its numbers swell during the summertime as tourists arrive by the ferryload and day-trippers fill the narrow sidewalks. Sausalito is a beautiful spot, enjoying unsurpassed views of the city across the bay. The southern part of town along Bridgeway is chockablock with souvenir shops, boutiques, galleries, and overpriced cafés, as well as two terrific bars, the No Name and Paterson’s; the local scene can be found a short walk away on Caledonia Street, which is full of great restaurants like Sushi Ran (107 Caledonia St, 415-332-3620), a favorite of many Bay Area foodies. Sausalito is host to many street fairs and festivals throughout the year, from art shows to chili cook-offs. The town is also home to a unique community of floating homes—approximately 400 houseboats in all—some of them tiny one-room abodes, others magnificent mansions on the water.

People Soup: Tourist Tourism in San Francisco

By Dan Bollwinkel
Tourists: Graceless, smelly, and reminiscent of an M.C. Escher lithograph. Or so Dan Bollwinkel would have us believe. But that doesn't mean the fools are all bad. After all, they sure know how to pick a pretty bridge to photograph, and they do serve as visual examples of how the other 49 states live. So swallow your pride, and flagrantly violate the eponymous creed of our books and website. Follow the tourists!

Lighthouse Café
After a 3-hour hike in the Muir Woods, my family and I drove into Sausalito in search of a late lunch. We crept into the Lighthouse Cafe half an hour before closing, and pored over the extensive menu of egg and pancake breakfasts, sandwiches, and burgers, in need of a refuel. Several items caught my eye, including the Norwegian Salmon Omelette and the raspberry pancakes large enough to cover an entire plate. Not wanting to choose between pancakes and eggs, I selected the Ultimate Breakfast, which included eggs, bacon, a fruit pancake, home fries and toast. As soon as my food arrived, I dug in, drenching my eggs and homefries in hot sauce and savoring my not-too-thick but delicious pancake and crisp and juicy bacon strips. It was the perfect way to cap off a day among the redwoods.
