It was Sunday night, and my dementia-stricken grandmother had just unleashed her latest verbal thrashing on my absent sister. My mother feared for Vanessa’s safety. But as usual, a dinner out would eliminate all (unjustified) ill feelings. The food and ambience at Silver Garden Restaurant on San Bruno Avenue was just the kind of homey Chinese cuisine and experience I’m usually deprived of in the East Bay, right down to the waitress’ lightning-fast words and distinct accent that I had trouble keeping up with. Our party of seven was one of the first to arrive that evening, but before long, the place was packed. Despite the small size of the establishment, the menu had an extensive selection that was screaming for me to come back again. The food was decent enough to satisfy me. Best of all, grandma barely said a word throughout the entire meal, choosing instead to devour her food. A true miracle worker.
