It used to be the home of the Skins, then the home of the Nats, and now DC United soccer fans finally have a stadium of their own. Feel free to join in for tailgating, samba music, and a heavy does of Spanish. The Metro conveniently has a stop here for those looking for something to do after a game.

I think that the names of DC sports teams are terrible. Redskins, Wizards, Capitols, Mystics, Nationals, United… if they’re not lame, they’re inanimate, nonsensical, or racist. Our rollergirls though, well they’re called the DemonCats, easily the best local team name—and on May 3 (doors open at 4pm, bout begins at 5pm) they’re taking on Scare Force One for the championship title. Only in their second season, the DC rollergirls are steadily gaining in popularity, because who doesn’t like to see cute, tough girls with names like Lois Slain and Speedy Gonbraless, battling each other on skates in short shorts? People without a sense of ironical aesthetics, that’s who. C’mon, now that the Caps are out of the playoffs, this is your second chance to see bone-crushing hits and scrappy brutality in the rink (And maybe we’ll be the bullies this time… Flyers suck!). Adults are $12, kids (6–11) are $6; kids 5 and under are free.

So did the 2006 World Cup leave you with FIFA football fever? Or were you just in it for the daytime drinking, the red cards, Cristiano Ronaldo’s beautiful face, and the headbutt replays? Well either way, if you were left with any amount of love for the beautiful game, then go out and support your local soccer club, DC United. Sure they’re in a bit of a late-season slump, and sure most of the roster is injured, but you only have a handful of home games left to go out there and cheer bilingually. We’ve got a new Argentine midfielder to get excited about, plus 17-year-old Freddy Adu, and the US Open Cup is just around the corner. There’s also the fact that you can just show up and buy a reasonably priced ticket. Or that when team captain Jaime Moreno scores, RFK turns into a giant merengue dance party. C’mon, you’ll have all of autumn and winter to watch American sports with their “strategy” and their “statistics” and their lah-dee-blah-blah…
