Sanur is a restaurant topped with a small, to-go eatery like a cherry on a sundae, though this cherry is spicy, savory, delicious and cheap. While I’m sure the food in the restaurant (which is located on the basement level) is fine, the little karipaps pictured to the left are the reason why I go to Sanur every morning to buy my breakfast. These little fried pastries, filled with a spicy potato, onion and pea mixture, are probably more of an anytime snack than a true breakfast item, but they sure as hell beat a McDonald’s hash brown or a bowl of congee, and at 80 cents a pop, they’re quite a bargain. Sanur has “economical breakfast” items, like curried mushrooms over flat noodles and sticky rice with chicken, for two bucks each, and while good, they really can’t hold a candle to the fiery brightness of one (or two, or three) of these packages of curried goodness.
