El Carmen Tequila & Taco Bar
You've probably heard about the luchadores adorning El Carmen's walls, and their sizable collection of tequila--it takes up 80% of the menu easy. Most people come here to drink, but I'm recommending (mostly) their food. People don't talk about it, but I think a lot of LA Mexican places have shit for chips and salsa. Carmen isn't one of them. They've got great (and unlimited) chips and salsa. Do yourself a favor and get some guacamole as well. It's the best I've had in LA by a mile. Five thousand, two hundred and eighty feet of better guac. As a vegetarian, I love places that offer appealing alternatives to the ever-present carne and pollo tacos. Carmen has fantastic tacos de papas. That's potato, and it's Fuck-Me-Brilliant. But what always sparks my cravings is their Spicy Margarita. It's simply a strong margarita (on the rocks) with jalapeno added for good measure. That spicy, lip-burning kick is an excellent compliment to the particular tang of a good margarita. I usually can't take more than one, but when I want that one go-around, I can't resist. Oh, and by the way, Vinny Kartheiser also recommends the potato tacos. So, there you go.
