Make sure to find your way to the gallery at Mission 17 sometime in June, where San Francisco-based artist and designer Ryan Alexiev is taking on some heady subject matter through a fairly unconventional medium: breakfast cereal. Aside from being aesthetically fascinating, more than slightly playful, and a potently critical of both consumer culture and the history of capitalist appropriation of nationality and resources, the show is largely edible. As Alexiev himself remarked at the opening, "I may be an artist, but I'll never be a starving artist." Highlights from The Land of a Million Cereals include the Osama mural, the magical Golden Spoon, and a real human skull--found on ebay--encrusted with golden Lucky Charms. Like Damien Hirst ever did that.
