Giant Purple Head
Not since Prince’s heyday or the advent of children’s programming megastars Barney and Tinky Winky has purple made such a major statement. Since its arrival to Golden Gate Park in May, it’s become the most unmistakable lavender landmark in the city. (Outside of the Castro, of course.) “Let’s go for a run to the giant purple head,” I say to a friend. “Drive past the giant purple head and make the first left,” I tell a lost tourist. As conceptual art, it naturally has a more thought-provoking name than “giant purple head.” The artist, Pepe Ozan, calls it The Dreamer. Originally commissioned for the 2005 Burning Man event, it’s only fitting that it continues to be surrounded by grass.
